In [our previous blog](https://blog.datafund.net/the-missing-asset-why-data-is-rwas-next-frontier-efd1b556db25), we explored why data is emerging as the next great challenge to solve in real-world asset tokenisation — a new kind of asset with qualities unlike any other asset: infinitely replicable and reusable, easily upgradable and used simultaneously and even appreciating in value the more it is used.

In this post, we look at where data tokenisation will have the most immediate impact: the industries already generating immense, underutilised value every day.

## Healthcare as a glimpse of what’s coming

For years, hospitals, clinical researchers, and pharmaceutical firms have been generating vast amounts of valuable data — from medical scans and trial results to anonymised patient records, all of it **data that have the potential to transform healthcare.**

Yet currently, none of them have an ethical or legal mechanism to monetise it. Tokenisation creates that path — allowing, for example, hospitals to fund further research by tokenising their diagnostic data while keeping patient information completely private through advanced encryption.

## Today’s expense is tomorrow’s asset

Pharmaceutical companies face a similar opportunity. Today, the **enormous datasets generated in clinical trials appear as expenses on a balance sheet.** Tokenisation could allow those datasets to be recognised as assets — altering how research is financed and accelerating drug development.

**Patients themselves could become stakeholders in this new model.** Those contributing anonymised data to medical studies might earn a share of the value created when their data fuels new treatments.

**For AI developers, meanwhile, tokenisation introduces a liquid market for licensing high-quality datasets** — reducing what was once a multi-year negotiation process to a matter of weeks.

## Better data = more data

As more stakeholders join this system, a flywheel effect begins:

Better data leads to better AI → better outcomes → more investment → even more data. This self-reinforcing loop could accelerate medical progress by orders of magnitude.
